Sucessful negotiators achieve the best result for all parties concerned.

Good negotiators walk away from a meeting with an agreement which satisfies both parties, with a win/win situation. Negotiating is a skill which can be learnt and, with practice, encourages good and long term relationships with customers and suppliers. 

I have worked with many sales people over the years who tend to think they have the best result if they have got the deal that they want, it moves them a notch nearer to their goals and targets but how does that leave the customer feeling - have their needs been met? Do they feel good about the deal? And perhaps the most important question - would they deal with you again or recommend you to another business contact?

Taking a more collaborative approach can often mean that you have a win/win situation with both parties happy with the end result.
